Cammisa Janca

Vincenzo Tropepe

CAMMISA JANCA, the debut album as a singer-songwriter, by the Calabrian artist Vincenzo Tropepe, an eclectic and multifaceted musician, originally from Polistena, released last September 8, produced by Crinale Lab, with physical distribution Audioglobe and digital distribution Orchard.

A work that was born from the desire to tell firsthand experiences and stories through music: at the beautiful age of 57, after numerous important collaborations with Italian and foreign artists, the time had come to make his world known.
Cammisa Janca is an intimate and introspective album, which was born during the pandemic period and tells stories... sometimes simple, very often ironic, while in songs like "Jeu Gridu" the theme of war finds intense and participatory expression.

Originally conceived with lyrics in English - with an attached physical release for the foreign market - when the work was almost finished, the project took an exciting and unexpected turn: thanks to the intuition of Don Antonio Gramentieri, artistic director of Crinale Lab and producer of the album, here is the proposal to sing everything in Calabrian dialect. The challenge was welcomed with enthusiasm and Vincenzo worked the "magic" with extreme and surprising simplicity, perhaps encouraged by his love for his language and his land. The songs were all written and set to music by Tropepe, with the exception of the title track, for which Gramentieri fully expressed his talent as a musician.

Nine original songs, nine songs that touch on different nuances of the human soul, nine songs to share stories, emotions, feelings that the public will be able to welcome and "feel".

Biography

From an early age he understood that music would accompany him in life: and so it was.
From the first instrument, a self-built guitar at the age of seven, the classic piece of wood (SOLIDBODY) with spun iron strings, to then move on to the real one a few years later, due to the sudden fever of a friend, who was therefore unable to playing the infamous "Christmas Novena": so once he learned the four chords, there he was on stage… it was a real success, I remember earning a lot of money.

Growing up listening to the records given to him by his dear friend Lello, he became passionate about the music of Throbbing Gristle, Joy Division and Alan Vega at a very young age, so much so that he even spent a short period in London (an obligatory destination for anyone who listened to that kind of music).

In '89, his first group experience, with Dirty Magazine, where he sang and played bass: at that time the scene was in turmoil, bands broke up and reformed so quickly, that you didn't have time to establish a gender or at least to have an identity of your own. In fact, immediately after Dirty Magazine, there were new bands, such as Dreadful Sight and Stoned, who played punk.

The next step was a "historic" ethno music group, Re Niliu, with whom he played bass (Rickenbacker 4001 Stereo) and various chatter. It was perhaps the best and most complete experience, lasting over ten years, and the chance to tour Italy and Germany, participating in '94 at WOMEX, organized by Peter Gabriel's Real World.

Today he plays with the Walking Trees: in addition to having a lot of fun, he has formed a fraternal friendship with each of them and cultivates his great passions: the blues, with all its magic and its history, and "vintage" guitars, which I usually vibrate in concerts.
